Mozart in Vienna
- Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgang Theophilus Mozart was born in Salzburg on January 27, 1756. His father Leopold Mozart soon became aware of his children´s musical talent, and by the age of six, Mozart was being taught the harpsichord, organ and violin by his father. His first public performance and compositions followed a year later. Leopold Mozart proved to be a successful manager, arranging the first concert tours for Wolfgang and his five-years older sister Nannerl to present his talented children to the aristocracy. During a stay in Vienna in 1762, the child prodigy first performed before the Viennese public in the Palais Collalto. The highlight of the tour was no doubt a performance before Empress Maria Theresia in Schönbrunn Palace. After the concert, the young Wolfgang boldly leapt onto the monarch´s lap, embraced her and kissed her. This child prodigy, a little man with a powdered wig and miniature sword, was the talk of the town. On the occasion of the family´s second visit to the imperial city from September 1767 to January 1769, Mozart successfully conducted his "Waisenhausmesse" (Orphanage Mass) and, in addition to more symphonies, wrote his first two operas, the singspiel Bastien und Bastienne and the opera buffa La finta semplice. Maria Theresia granted the twelve-year-old a two-hour audience in the Hofburg, but he failed to achieve musical success at court, despite being protected by C.W. Gluck.
