2003 España-Spain FDCTúnel bajo Puerto Somport (Tunnel Somport by Road - Tunnel routier Somport)

Las comunicaciones por carretera entre España y Francia, a través de la cordillera pirenaica, serán mucho más accesibles a raíz de la inauguración del Túnel de Somport, que este año se abre al tráfico. Una imagen de la entrada al túnel por la boca española, es el motivo que ilustra el sello dedicado a esta nueva e importante vía de comunicación. El Túnel de Somport une los valles del Aspe, en Francia, y del Alto Aragón, enlazando la Nacional 330 de la Red de Carreteras del Estado Español con la N-134 de la red francesa. Tiene una longitud total de 8.608 metros, de los que 5.759 m. pertenecen a la parte española y 2.849 m. a la francesa, constituyendo el túnel más largo de España. Cuenta con dos carriles, uno para cada sentido, una mediana, dos arcenes y dos aceras. Está dotado con las medidas de seguridad más completas, que incluyen sistemas de ventilación y evacuación de humos, alumbrado interior del túnel, circuito cerrado de T.V., red de telefonía, radiocomunicaciones, red de agua contra incendios, equipamientos de seguridad en nichos y refugios y sistemas de gestión técnica centralizada, entre otras importantes medidas, convirtiéndole en uno de los túneles más seguros de Europa. La primera tentativa de planificación fronteriza entre España y Francia para la construcción del Túnel se hizo en el año 1987. Posteriores se definió el trazado y se creó una Comisión Técnica entre ambos países. En abril de 1991 se firmó el convenio de construcción y en enero de 1994 se comenzaron las obras. En 1997 se finalizaron las excavaciones del terreno y en el año 2000 dieron comienzo los trabajos de instalaciones y equipamientos de seguridad. En 2003, con la apertura del nuevo Túnel, se amplía la red de comunicaciones por carretera entre la Península Ibérica y el resto de Europa y se acortan las distancias con nuestros vecinos europeos.
